This is a series where we ask the all important question for any older game title. Does it Hold Up? This is a review of Freelancer for the PC.
The game is held in pretty high esteem for a lot of people. In any discussion about Space Sims, it usually comes up. I wanted to find out if it was still good by today’s standards, so I gave it a try.
Here is a guide for the Mods I used.

July 29, 2020If anyone's interested in scratching the Freelancer itch, it's abandoware now & can be snagged for free from https://www.myabandonware.com/game/freelancer-bbb
No need to buy a physical copy & yes, this site is legal in most countries as it adheres to the DCMA, if anything gets picked up by Steam or GoG they change the download link to a link to whichever site it's on.
PS: They've got Wing Commander too 😀

July 29, 2020Don't like the control system. Sure it is becoming common for space games to use mouse these days, but other games do it better than freelancer.

July 29, 2020"And roberts left…"
Nah, he was kicked out by someone sent there from Microsoft who was supposed to make sure the game finally leaves development hell and actually gets released.
"luckily, the reductions didn't completely ruin the game"
nah, they actually made the game into something playable and game-like, because before then, roberts was handling Freelancer the same way he's handling Star Citizen – it was constantly bloating due to constantly having useless features added which didn't work, and was constantly behind schedule, and wasn't too much of a game.

July 29, 2020I wish I could have enjoyed the game when it was new. All it did was blue screen my computer 10 minutes in in the demo. Every time it was getting good… Blah.

July 29, 2020I played this game as a kid. And it absolutely blew me away. I fell in love with it. I'm just coming back to it now years later, and I have to say it's just as great as I remember. One of the best games I've ever played.

July 29, 2020It's abandonware now. You can download it for free. Google "freelancer abandonware". Runs on Windows 10 no problem. This game still shines in 2020. The game has dated graphics, but the space sandbox is one of best there is even today. Space is alive with the action of radio chatter, NPC battles, and ships doing their thing. No game comes close to giving you that feeling. The mouse controls are the best, too. Never has been replicated to level it was.

July 29, 2020It holds up for me. Starting to install these HD Textures in a second install and check out some other mods. You can get into space battles and pick up better guns in between story missions.

July 29, 2020Owned this. didn't like it after playing i-war 1 and 2. the space combat was far too simplistic.

July 29, 202016 years later, still I am looking for the game that can replace the awesome memories I had with freelancer back in 2003.

July 29, 2020Side missions are as "pointless" as upgrading your ship and weapons.
Giskard Reventlov
July 29, 2020It does, I'm playing it right now, I will recommend some graphic enhancing mods and a mod to change Trent appearance. The story is Epic!

July 29, 2020Starlancer and Freelancer are games that really deserve a remaster.
TheSpellShell
July 29, 2020This is amazing game. I love main story, but also I love the after-complition stage than almost every faction is neutral with you and you can observe the living universe with merchant ships and the pirates and police acting without players interaction. Or you can take a part in this action, or explore border worlds. Some systems (expecially with red giant) just blow my mind back in school and i like how in "sky boxes" you always can see parts of the Sirius Sector because they had distinct colors of nebulas.

July 29, 2020the graphics in this game are "simple" but remain aesthetically pleasing. a few games have aged well like this, like deus ex for instance. some have aged terribly, like the elder scrolls oblivion. there was a phase where everyone was phong shading everything and adding overwhelming amounts of blood to the frame.. disgusting lol
Ankh Morpok
July 29, 2020Wing Commander Privateer was superior in terms of depth of controls, progression (no gates locked between systems) and feel and atmosphere. Freelancer in comparison felt like a half finished game, especially the character models and the bar scenes.
Brad Corcoran
July 29, 2020its crazy to see how ED and SC still dont hold the needed candle to this game. I really wish this gets remastered or even get a sequel but we all know that will never happen. :/
Stanley Tweedle
July 29, 2020It would've been nicer to show the vanilla look of the game. After all, you're reviewing Freelancer, not a bunch of mods for Freelancer. I never liked when reviewers mod a game to the point where it no longer looks like the game they're reviewing.
Doug Graves
July 29, 2020I'm still playing Freelancer with the Discovery Mod.
